backyard fort phase 2 and 3

A few weeks ago Jamie and the gang tackled phase two of the fort- the second level. They built a second floor, a rail that goes all the way around the second level, added a fireman’s pole, a bucket with a pulley and a space for the rope ladder to go. The week following Jamie and George strung up the rope ladder and all was complete on our awesome fort. Jay happily “helped” with all of the construction and building and loves to play up there. Right now his favorite part of phase 2 is probably the bucket and pulley but he is really getting a hang of the rope ladder and loves to be on the second level. While Charlie doesn’t (can’t) climb the rope ladder just yet he still loves to be on the second floor and both boys are really getting a hang of the fireman’s pole (with assistance of course). Thanks so much to everyone that helped out; the boys LOVE it and I am sure will only grow to love it more.

officially a granny

It’s no secret that I have usually been categorized as the responsible, prepared person for most of my life. I mean I usually can be found at home most nights and not out partying (this was the case even before children) and in college I was known to have anything you might need… needle and thread to fix your ripped seam- I had it, bandaid- yup, tylenol- sure, stain stick- indeed, among many other things AND sadly I had most of these things with me at all times in my purse. I liked to think that it was good prep for having kiddos ;) That being said, I guess it’s only fitting that I have picked up a hobby to match my Granny ways- quilting! I have always enjoyed most types of crafting although sewing was never really my thing. I did a bit of it from time to time while working on projects for the kids or house projects but never loved it. However, this Christmas my wonderful husband got me my own sewing machine and since then I have been hooked! I love how simple it is to use my new machine (I was borrowing my Mom’s old machine prior to this and never quite got the hang of it) and I have been sewing during my free time. My first big project was a quilt for Jay. I fell in love with this cute car fabric, Peak Hour by Riley Blake, and thought that it would make a perfect blanket for my car loving kiddo. It’s not a perfect quilt (don’t look too closely at any of the seams, most of them are pretty wonky) but I did it on my own- including the machine quilting so I am pretty tickled with myself. And more importantly Jay loves it which means I am one happy Mama ;) I can’t wait to start working on my next project… now if only I could find a few more hours in the day to sew…

My sweet husband modeled the full quilt before leaving for work this morning, although his little helper preferred watching to participating.

3 of a kind

I suppose it’s about time that we made official announcements around here…

it's a boy!

In August/July we will be adding another brother to the mix!! I had my 20 week ultrasound last Friday and Jamie and I were thrilled to see a happy (yes this is an assumption but how could he not be?) and very healthy little boy growing away. I can’t imagine how crazy things are going to be around here in the coming months; however, I also can’t imagine my heart feeling more full!

Our “it’s a boy” announcement photos didn’t exactly go as planned (the blue balloon I got was popped 30 seconds after it was handed to Jay and I didn’t get a single photo of it) but I guess that’s what I get for planning anything in the first place. This is our reality these days- a house full of busy, busy boys who don’t want to sit still for photos. Thanks Daddy for helping to get one where everyone is at least looking.

touch a truck

A few months ago Jamie and I took Jay and Charlie to an event called Orlando Touch a Truck. A local church, Orlando Lutheran Church, hosts an event where they get all kinds of trucks and work vehicles to come in and the kids can sit in them, ride on them and play around on them. Jay had a blast looking at all of the trucks and even Charlie got to have a few turns.

big boy bike

Jamie and I have been waiting a while before going ahead and purchasing Jay his first bike.  After a little bit of thought (mostly on Jamie’s part since I didn’t have many opinions on the topic) we settled on getting him a pedaless bike (also known as a push bike, balance bike, glider bike).  He is getting better by the day at pushing/gliding on his bike and I am having a hard time keeping up with them now that he is really getting the hang of it. And yes this is the same bike you spied a few days ago in Charlie’s 15 month post.

backyard fort, phase 1

There has never been any doubt in my mind that our boys are lucky. They want for nothing, are constantly showered with love and attention and most importantly they have an awesome Daddy! The later most applies to this post specifically but the others were worth mentioning too ;)

Why is Daddy so particularly awesome these days you ask? Because after not much convincing from Mommy he agreed and almost immediately started working on their very own fort!! Let me back up a bit.. It’s no secret that our boys LOVE the outdoors. If they are sad/grumpy/bored, we walk outside and all is well with the world again. Because of their love of the outdoors we spend a whole lot of time out there. Frequently, we head out front to our courtyard (such a great area to have with little kids) to play in the water table. Jay and Charlie usually take time to “wash and rinse cars” and basically drench themselves in water while we play. However, most recently Jay has taken to digging and moving dirt with his dump truck and cars. He digs in the flower bed out front, which doesn’t bother me (I don’t have a green thumb or the time/desire to do much with it so it’s not like he’s digging up my flowers) so it wasn’t a problem until we potty trained. Prior to potty training we/I would just take off his dirt covered diaper, hose him off and then head inside. After potty training we now have this…

our problem

See the problem? And yes it is a cute tushie and yes he will probably kill me later for posting this photo but I am okay with that ;) There is a whole lot more scrubbing that needs to take place these days after playing in addition to it just being kind of gross.

So in an effort to refocus this post and brag on my ultra-talented and fantastic husband we decided that Jay needed a “clean” place to dig and hence the fort idea was born. Jamie had help from Josh and George last Sunday with the planning, initial purchasing of materials and building of the sandbox and frame and this Saturday with the help of Josh and Uncle Mark, the cover for the sandbox was built and installed. It (the fort) isn’t finished yet but I am too excited about it not to share. There is a mix of iphone photos and DSLR camera photos below to show the progress and I promise to post again when it’s finished. Get ready to be jealous because it’s cool and you know that you want one :)

When we decided it was time to go in for the night. To say that they like it would be quite the understatement.
when we needed to head in for the night

I thought having someplace to sit near the sandbox would be especially nice and after looking around for a few ideas I stumbled upon these plans. Jamie and the guys took these plans and kind of ran with it and let’s be honest, ours is so much cooler than the original!  Here’s a video of how the lid works so you can get a better idea of how it works…

park time with daddy

In the fall I was swamped with client photos- I had the almost every weekend and sometimes both days of the weekend booked.  It was fun, don’t get me wrong, but I did hate that it took away from some of our weekend family time.  Either way it happened and I was busy which made it nice that the boys could join me on a location scouting trip.  We made a night out of it- had a picnic in the park, ran around and ended up playing at the playground until the sun went down.  Both Jay and Charlie have really started to love going to the park and up until this point Charlie had really only been on the swings; however, since Daddy was there he helped with the slide a few times and Charlie LOVED it.

just the boys

I know, I am a dork… but I am just tickled with how well (at least in my opinion) these little peg people came out. I bought some plain peg people awhile back from this etsy seller and didn’t end up doing anything with the for quite some time. I finally started painting them shortly after the New Year and I have done a little here and a little there until finishing them up today. It was a such a fun project and I already can’t wait to meet sweet baby #3 and work on their peg person! Jay is thrilled that they are finally done, he has been dying to play with them.

catching up

It seems as though the last few days I have finally had enough energy to catch up on a few things around the house that I have been neglecting (the blog included). I am not exactly sure how long this energy spurt will last; in fact, I am pretty sure that I will be snoozin’ along with the boys by the end of the next week (chasing two littles and baking another one at the same time really wears a girl out). So bear with me while I have the energy to play catch up… I have photos that are too cute to not share ;)

First up, Christmas. I know, I know these are pretty old but the boys were so cute Christmas morning while they were opening their presents from Santa. Their excitement was contagious and Jay’s genuine joy over everything (including socks) is something that I won’t soon forget and probably my favorite part of the holidays this year.
