2013

The ball has dropped and the New Year has been rung in and as we begin 2013 I have a hard time with some people’s approach to the past year. I think that it is easy for most people to look at the past year and only remember the difficult times and the things that they so quickly want to get away from.  I think it is difficult, yet so much more rewarding, to point out the things, regardless of how small, that were so wonderful and I can only wish to  relive a million times over…

Tomorrow is not guaranteed, so as we begin 2013 I want to take a moment to remember, remember those cherished moments and times I don’t ever want to forget because I can only hope that is what my children will do when they get to an age where they are able to reflect.

This year…

-My baby boys turned one and two years old.  They are happy, healthy and so FULL of life.

-Jamie and I celebrated 6 years of marriage.  We didn’t have a big celebration or go out for a fancy meal but we did take a moment to acknowledge just how lucky we are to have found each other.

-My baby boy, Charlie, learned to sit on his own, crawl and then walk.  He is exploring his world with each new mile stone and taking it all in.

-Charlie started giving kisses, hugs and started saying Mama and meaning it.  Melt me…

-Jay Bird learned SO much… news songs, new words, colors, shapes, the beginnings of reading.  I could go on but this post just isn’t long enough. He is a sponge and I LOVE that he is continuously soaking it all in.

-Jamie’s job got better and he got to finally work from home once a week consistently which means that we got to have lunch with Grandpa almost every week for the last year; something so simple yet so cherished.

-We watched as dear friends expanded their families and welcomed precious babies into this world.

-We visited with family and friends that we don’t get to see often.

-We welcomed family back home.

-We played.  We played inside with toys, we played outside at the park.  We played uninterrupted with our children for as long as we wanted to.

-We celebrated holidays both big and small with joy and the enthusiasm of our children.

2012 has been a year full of blessings; here’s to 2013 and another year of the same.

sweet moments with my boys

we decorated our tree

Last year we didn’t decorate our tree… it toppled over once (because a certain little boy pulled on the lights) before the decorations were on it so we decided to just stick with lights to be safe. This year, after a bunch of deliberation Jamie and I decided that we would decorate our tree. I like having the decorations on it and all of the memories that are coupled with them; however to be on the safe side we only hung non-breakable ornaments. It was the first time that Jay helped decorate the tree and I love that we let him help. He had such a great time looking at and hanging the ornaments and I love how there are places with clumps of ornaments because he hung them so close to each other :)

Here’s photos from the decorating and by the way he does not have to be convinced to wear the holiday headbands at all; he loves them! He did last year too…

tree elves

Honestly, I am not exactly sure how it started or why but each year Jamie and I pick up Christmas Trees for most of his family. I think it may have started one year when someone asked us to grab them one after hearing how reasonably priced ours was going to be and then the last few years we have taken more “orders”. Let me preface this story by saying that I love the holidays, I love getting a tree and I love picking out trees for others too. Honestly, I usually have trouble sleeping the day before we pick out trees… I think it’s the excitement over the holiday season starting, I know it’s silly but so true…

It’s been a fun tradition. We pick out the trees, trim them up with Pepere’s chainsaw and then deliver them to our “patrons”. This is the second year that Maggie and Josh have tree elved with us and it was just as fun as it usually is :)

Also, I dug through some old photos to find past elfing adventures- it’s crazy how much can change in a year!

lighting of the tree in WP

Recently, Jay has become super excited about Christmas lights and Christmas trees (all to be expected) so we decided to meet Jamie on Park Ave to watch the lighting of the Christmas Tree. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty tree and it was cool to watch it light up all at once but the hour plus that we waited to see it happen (with a one year old that hadn’t napped in the afternoon) was less than desirable. Honestly, the two best things that came from the trip were
1. knowing what it’s like and not really having to see it again
2. the glow-sticks that were given out after dark!!

Charlie swiped Jay’s glow stick while we were getting our picture taken and had a blast with them the whole way home. Jay, Jamie and I had so much fun playing in the bath with them after Charlie had gone to bed. Here are a few photos Daddy took with a slow shutter speed while we were sending the “lightning fish” swimming through the water.

I think it is so funny that Jay has no clue that his glow-stick is being swiped!

the tree

Jay is in the tub in all of the following photos- at times you can see him better than you can at others depending on how much he moved during the shot.

By the way, in case you couldn’t guess we would recommend a glow-stick bath if your kids (or you- no judgement here) ever happen upon some glow-sticks. It was cool!

pumpkin pickin’

We headed out the pumpkin patch last week with the boys to go pumpkin picking.  In the years past we have headed out to St Lukes they have a great patch and great people working it but since it isn’t close to our house and we were going before supper on a week night we decided it was best to stay a little closer to home (a good choice that was confirmed by the crying and tears from tired hungry boys on the ride home).  I fully intended on bringing home a large pumpkin to carve along with a few small ones for the kiddos to paint.  However, when we got there Jay couldn’t be bothered to pick a large pumpkin he just wanted to load and unload the small pumpkins in and out of the wagon and pull it up and down the aisles.  It definitely wasn’t worth fighting with him to pick a large one when he was perfectly happy towing the small ones around and while he did that Charlie crawled on and around any pumpkin we would sit him next to.  We ended up bringing home $2.25 in tiny pumpkins and both boys had a blast- definitely a win as far as I am concerned!

sorry for the overload of photos, I am making up for lost blogging time ;)

this is one of Charlie’s new silly faces

so this happened…

We are now the proud owners of a Sport Truck.  More commonly known as a Minivan; however, while signing our life away on the paperwork we happened to notice that the official name was a Toyota Truck (Sport Model) and that is all that I needed; there is no turning back- Sport Truck it is!!  It rolls off the tongue a little better and doesn’t make me cringe (I never, never thought I would see the day that I was driving a van) :)

The short version is that a new vehicle has been on our mind lately.  It’s no secret that we are hoping for a third kiddo at some point and there is no way that we could fit three carseats in my current Ford Escape.  Having the two boys in the back was already a tight squeeze and we knew that three just wouldn’t work.  Oh and since we have been asked- NO, we are not pregnant again, we just really didn’t want to have to rush into a decision when the time comes.   So we started looking and were hoping to get a Toyota Highlander.  We were thinking that we would be able to get away with putting Jay’s carseat in the third row of the Highlander and have Charlie and someday-baby in the second row.  However, after we took a look at them on the lot we realized that they aren’t made to have carseats in the way back (there is no LATCH system- ie a seat that is intended to host a carseat) and the storage with the third row up was next to none so we started looking at the vans.  As chance would have it they had one that fit our needs and we signed on the dotted line (lines actually- man there is a whole lot of paperwork!!)  So now we are the proud owners of a garnet 2011 Toyota Sienna- or Sport Truck if you will :)  We aren’t especially excited about the car payments we now have (both of the other cars were paid off) but we are thrilled that we found something that works for us and for what it means for the future!

We didn’t get the Sport Truck home until after the boys had already gone to bed last night so before Jamie headed to work we took Jay out to see his new ride.  He was very excited about it and he is even more excited that we have room for other people to now ride with us (it’s an 8 passenger)!

Charlie is a thumb sucker but he usually doesn’t do it unless he is going to bed… sweet boy must have still been tired this morning. So glad I caught it on camera :)
